Kinship Care - Grandparent and Family Member Caretakers

A number of grandparents and other relatives care for children whose own parents are unable to care for them.

This arrangement, called kinship care, can be an informal, private arrangement between the parents and relative caregivers, including:

  • Grandparents
  • Aunts
  • Uncles
  • Other relatives
  • Family friends.

In other situations, the children are in Cuyahoga County custody and placed with a relative caregiver.

We want to support kinship caregivers and help them work effectively with the child welfare system. View the Kinship Care Guidebook.

The Ohio Resource Guide for Relatives Caring for Children is a comprehensive guidebook containing information about:

  • What kinship care is
  • How to care for children who were abused, neglected, or abandoned
  • Finding help with expenses
  • Finding help with medical services
  • Finding help with educational services
  • Finding help with legal services and understanding legal terms
